To apply for an Australia visa thought the General Skilled Migration programme such as Independent Subclass 189 visa, Nominated Subclass 190 visa and Regional Sponsored Subclass 489, a positive skills assessment is required.

ALL applicants applying to migrate to Australia, maybe asked to provide information on their eligibility to register and therefore work in Australia. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is responsible for the registration for nurses and ANMAC oversees the skills assessment.

ANMAC offers three assessments for migration skills assessment.

  1. Full skills assessment
  2. Modified skills assessment
  3. Modified PLUS Skills Assessment

ALL applicants (international graduate and overseas applicants) are subject to the 5 assessment criteria to determine whether they are suitable for migration to Australia. They are:

Proof of Identity

They must provide

  • biostatistical page of passport,
  • a passport sized photo take in the last 6 months and
  • change of name documents such as marriage certificate if applicable.

English language proficiency

They must achieve the required score in ONE of the English tests.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    ANMAC only accept test results from one or maximum of two setting(s) in a 6 months period merely if the application achieves
    1. A minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting and
    2. No score in any component of the test is below 6.5.
  • Occupational English Test (OET) for nurses and achieves a minimum score of B in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    ANMAC only accept test results from one or maximum of two setting(s) in a 6 months period merely if the applicant
    1. Tested in all four components in each sitting and
    2. No score in any component of the test is below C.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
    Where the applicant must achieve a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in all four components – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    ANMAC only accept test results from one or maximum of two setting(s) in a 6 months period merely if the applicant achieves
    1. a minimum overall score of 65 in each sitting and
    2. no score in any of the four communicative skills is below 58.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT
    Applicants must achieve a minimum total score of 94 AND the following minimum score in each section of the test
    • 24 listening
    • 24 reading
    • 27 writing
    • 23 speaking

ANMAC only accept test results from one or maximum of two setting(s) in a 6 months period merely if the applicant achieves 1. A minimum total score of 94 in each sitting and 2. no score in any of the sections is below – 20 listening, 19 reading, 24 writing, 20 speaking.

Educational equivalence

All applicants must provide their graduation certificate and basic transcript.

Full skills assessment applicants must provide a transcript that contains

  • a breakdown of the number of hours completed in both the theoretical and practical components of the course,
  • commencement and
  • completion dates.

Professional practise

The applicant has practised as a nurse in the 5 years preceding their application dates.

Professional references are mandatory where paid work experience exists. This is not optional. You should provide professional references to demonstrate your skills and a minimum of 3 months, full time equivalent, paid work. 

Applicants with 3 years full-time bachelor’s degree in Australia are not required to provide professional references.

All your professional references MUST meet the following criteria:

  • be on official letterhead
  • be written by a direct supervisor who is a nurse or a midwife
  • be dated
  • contain an original signature

Include this contact information for each referee:

  • official hospital email address (ANMAC will not accept emails from fee web-based email accounts)
  • contact telephone number for the organisation (mobile phones will not be accepted)

Fitness to practice

The applicant can demonstrate that they are fit to practice without restrictions.

International Graduates – Enrolled Nurse – Modified Skills Assessment

If you are currently registered with the NMBA, the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ), then you are qualified for a modified skills assessment.

The applicant must meet all 5 assessment criteria listed above.

For Professional practise requirement, applicants with 3 years full-time bachelor’s degree in Australia are not required to provide professional references.

Steps for a Modified Skills Assessment:

Step 1: You must arrange to have verification of your registration posted to emailed to ANMAC

Step 2: Please provide the collect and scan copies of the following original supporting documents

  • Copy of passport biodata (double page)
  • Passport sized photo with the last 6 months
  • Change of name document (if required)
  • Graduation certificate
  • Professional references if you have worked as a nurse in Australia or overseas

Please note that you must submit documentary evidence in the following format:

  • Original documents only
  • Scanned in colour
  • Scanned at a resolution of 600 dpi or above
  • File must be a .pdf
  • the passport sized photo must be a jpeg, .jpg or .png

Unregistered Nurse but hold a current letter of “Notice of in principle approval of registration subject to proof of identity” from AGPRA – Modified PLUS Skills Assessment

The applicant must meet all 5 assessment criteria listed above.

Step 1: You must arrange to have verification of your registration posted to emailed to ANMAC

Step 2: You current ‘Notice of in-principle registration subject to proof if identity’ from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Step 3: Please provide the collect and scan copies of the following original supporting documents

  • Copy of passport biodata (double page)
  • Passport sized photo with the last 6 months
  • Change of name document (if required)
  • Graduation certificate and Transcript that contains commencement and completion dates.
  • Professional references that support your work as a paid nurse

Please note that you must submit documentary evidence in the following format:

  • Original documents only
  • Scanned in colour
  • Scanned at a resolution of 600 dpi or above
  • File must be a .pdf
  • the passport sized photo must be a jpeg, .jpg or .png

Oversea Applicants – Full Skills Assessment

If you do not hold registration in Australia but obtained a minimum Bachelor of nursing qualification and hold registered as a registered nurse from one of the following countries. You are eligible for full skills assessment.

  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Step 1: You must arrange to have verification of your registration posted to emailed to ANMAC

Step 2: You must satisfy the minimum English language requirement and provide your English language test number and date of completion from the test provider.

Step 3: Please provide the collect and scan copies of the following original supporting documents

  • Copy of passport biodata (double page)
  • Passport sized photo with the last 6 months
  • Change of name document (if required)
  • Graduation certificate
  • Transcript that contains a breakdown of the number of hours completed in both the theoretical and practical components of the course, commencement and completion dates.
  • Professional references with a minimum of 3 months’ work experience
