Skills Assessment from AITSL

AITSL is responsible for making an assessment on an applicant’s work experience and qualifications to determine the applicant’s suitability for skilled migration – Teacher.

The estimated assessment time is 10 weeks from the date of payment and submission of application.

There are a few visas for teachers to work in Australia. The options include:

Skilled migration visas

Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 489)

Employer sponsored visas

Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 482)

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)

Requirement

ALL applications (International graduates and overseas applicants) will be assessed against 2 criteria:

  1. Qualification
  2. English language proficiency.

Pathway 1 – International Graduates  

1.Qualifications

The applicant must complete a minimum of 4 years full time or part time equivalent bachelor’s degree that results in qualification(s).  This MUST include a relevant initial teacher education qualification and any other qualifications. You will fulfil this criterion by studying in Australia for a bachelor’s degree in teaching.

Initial teacher education qualification requirement

  1. At least 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent higher education level study of initial teacher education.
  2. Complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school setting.  (Please see the individual requirements based on the occupation below)

Occupation specific notes

Early Childhood Teacher: 

An early childhood (pre-primary school) teacher applicant must complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the Birth to 8 yearsage range in education programs prior to and in the early years of primary school.

Primary School Teacher:

The applicant must complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the 5 to 12 years age range in a primary school setting

Middle School Teacher: 

The applicant must complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the 10 – 15 years age range in a middle school setting. Supervised teaching practice may be completed in a separate middle school or by teaching students in both upper primary and lower secondary schools, with a minimum of 10 days teaching upper primary aged students (10 – 12 years) and a minimum of 10 days teaching lower secondary school aged students (13 – 15 years).

Secondary School Teacher
The applicant must complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the 13 and 18 years in secondary schools.

Special Needs Teacher
The study must include 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent study of special needs and completed at least 45 days of supervised teaching practise.

Teacher of the Sight Impaired
The study must include 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent study of Special Education and completed at least 45 days of supervised teaching practise.

Special Education NEC Teacher
The study must include 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent study of Special Education and completed at least 45 days of supervised teaching practise.

Please note that teacher registration is not required for the skills assessment.

2.English language proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate their English language proficiency by ONE of the following:

Option 1

If you have completed at least 4 full years of a bachelor’s degree in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America resulting in qualification comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor’s degree or higher.

An Australian bachelor qualification in teaching usually requires 4 years full-time studies. (You will fulfil this criterion by studying in Australia for a bachelor’s degree in teaching.)

Option 2

An Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRF) that shows:

  • Minimum of 7.0 for both Reading and Writing and
  • Minimum of 8.0 for both Speaking and Listening.

The IELTS test scores must appear on a single IELTS TRF and be the result of a test undertaken during the 24-month period prior to submitting an application.

Checklist

Evidence to support your application for skill assessment include:

  • Passport identity page
  • Evidence of name change, e.g. birth certificate, if applicable

Qualifications – evidence related to initial teacher education (ITE) qualification

  • Final award certificate (testamur) for ITE qualification from awarding university (required)
  • Final academic transcript for each year of the ITE qualification from awarding university (required)
  • Evidence of supervised teaching practice: an official, signed and dated document from the awarding university (required)

Qualifications – evidence related to other higher education qualifications

  • Final award certificate (testamur) for ITE qualification from awarding university (required)
  • Final academic transcript for each year of the ITE qualification from awarding university (required)

Evidence related to English language proficiency

  • Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRM), if applicable

Evidence related to supervised teaching practice

  • An official statement from the university awarding the ITE qualification that fulfils the following:
    • On an official university letterhead
    • Signed and dated by a university representative
    • Details the duration of the supervised teaching practice that has been completed
    • States the age range of the student taught

Recent graduates from Australian universities

If the applicant has completed qualifications at an Australian university in the 6 months before submitting an applicationare not required to provide a final award certificate.

Recent graduates from an Australian university are required to submit:

  • a final academic transcript for each year of study
  • an official statement confirming completion of study by the university Registrar
  • Electronic Qualifications

Please note that you must submit documentary evidence in the following format:

  • Scans of the original documents;
  • In colour; and
  • Scan resolution of 300 dpi.

Pathway 1 – Overseas Applicants

If the applicant is an overseas qualified teacher or obtained their overseas teaching qualifications, they must satisfy both 2 criteria.

1.Qualification

That their overseas teaching qualification is a minimum of 4 years full time or part time equivalent bachelor’s degree and fulfil the Initial teacher education qualification requirement.

Initial teacher education qualification requirement

  • At least 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent higher education level study of initial teacher education.
  • Complete at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school setting. (Please see abovementioned Occupation specific notes)

2.English Language proficiency

If the applicant did not obtain their bachelor’s degree in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. They must conduct an academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRF) and score at least 7.0 for both Reading and Writing and at least 8.0 for both Speaking and Listening.

Qualifications from the People’s Republic of China

Applicants with qualifications from the People’s Republic of China are required to submit original bound booklets, issued by a Notary Public Office in China, for the following degree documents:

  • Certificate of graduation
  • Final academic transcript
  • Degree certificate
